  1. Melsie guided me through Lalibela during the Timkeat (Epiphany). He gave me all the necessary information, told when and where to watch the ceremony and procession. He took care so that I won't get lost and was very welcoming and nice. He even invited me for a dinner to try the local cuisine! I can vey much recommend him for going through Lalibela with a local guide!

  2. I spent 6 weeks in Ethiopia as part of a medical outreach trip as well as a cultural tour. My travels took me to Addis, Hawassa, Gondar, Simien Mountains, Lalibela, Aksum (Axum), Tigray region and a few places in between. I met many wonderful people, but few were as generous and/or knowledgable as Melsie.

I met Melsie for the Lalibela portion of my adventure. He was courteous, spoke english well, and knew many things about the rock hewn churches of Lalibela. He did not allow others to harass me during the tour. He was flexible and therefore I was able to see the places I wanted and spend the right amount of time at each stop. All of these things you would expect from a tour guide. But what sets him apart from the rest, was his willingness to help me explore what it is really like to live in Ethiopia.

On the second day, in Lalibela, he invited me to join his friends for drinks that evening. We had some beers in the local places, played foosball in the streets, and went to a local place where they drink and smoke shisha.

This was a highlight of my trip because it was authentic, real. If you want to go to Ethiopia and a have touristic experience, then you can find about a hundred different guides to take you to the hot spots. If you want to go to Ethiopia and have a unique experience and get to know the locals more intimately, then Melsie is your guy. I highly recommend his services. (Just be patient after reaching out to him, internet service is very difficult to obtain across the board).

    Cheers and safe travels!

    Matt
